News and local media outlets

What is news?

The key question a good reporter asks about a potential story is "so what?"

If the subject will have significant impact — on people, institutions, the economy, the future — it is news. Sometimes an acceptable answer to "so what?" is simply that the information is entertaining or intriguing.

Drawing on many years of experience as professional journalists and of monitoring the news media, News Bureau staff members judge what content news organizations are willing and likely to use. Likewise, they can advise you on whether your story would be of interest to local media and send releases solely to this group, without wider distribution.
